After leaving Japan, our last stop in Asia during our family gap year, we flew to Guatemala to start six weeks in Central America. We didn’t know much about Guatemala before deciding to come here. We wanted a place to spend time focused on our Spanish as well as one that had plenty of outdoor activities. Well, Guatemala certainly fits the bill and more!

From volcanos to the rich Mayan culture, Guatemala offers a lot for families looking to explore Central America. We’ve been so touched by the kindness of the Guatemalans, especially considering the very difficult past of the country. The country is still healing from such a troubled time period and yet, we’ve had so many interesting conversations about the culture, life here today, the history of the Mayans, and of the volcanos. We hope it’s the first of many trips here!
