Berggasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli in Weissbad Switzerland

Weissbad, Switzerland 2019

Our Europe adventures as a family started during James’ previous job. One of the great joys for our family was spending the month of June in the summer of 2017 and again 2019 in Zurich, Switzerland. Switzerland is an idyllic country for everyone but especially for young families. We often joke there’s probably nowhere else on Earth where you can hike to the top of a mountain and then stumble across a beautiful restaurant selling brats and beers, while the kids play on an alpine playground next door. How could you not feel this way while enjoying lunch at the Aescher gasthaus (above)?

We had a wonderful time in each of those summers and those were the first big trips where we realized that travel with kids was not only possible but could be incredibly eye-opening and actually fun (imagine that!).

During our family gap year, we knew Europe would be a main part of our trip. We ultimately decided to start the Europe portion in Oslo, as a result of a cheap ticket we found from JFK. We could have easily stayed in Europe for a year and hope we’ll be back many times in the future.

Our Europe stops during our family gap year:

Oslo, Norway

Copenhagen, Denmark

Prague, Cesky Krumlov and the Czech countryside (Czech Republic)

Budapest, Hungary

Slovenia

Sailing the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia

Tuscany, Italy
